A workshop for writers who are interested in creating autobiographical work

This practical, hands-on workshop will guide participants in discussions on how drawing on your personal story can create powerful and meaningful work. Led by award-winning poet, playwright and performer, Hannah Lavery (The Drift, Lament for Sheku Bayoh) you'll learn writing prompts that can help you get your ideas down on paper. During the workshop Hannah will also discuss the risks and vulnerabilities of making work which draws upon your own experiences.

Taking place on Zoom, this interactive workshop can facilitate a maximum of 20 participants who will be able to be heard and seen throughout.

This event is part of our First Stages Festival - a celebration of storytelling and playwriting.

The Traverse Theatre is funded by Creative Scotland and The City of Edinburgh Council, with additional support from The Scottish Government Performing Arts Venues Relief Fund.

Meet the facilitator

Hannah Lavery

Hannah is an award-winning poet, playwright, performer and experienced workshop facilitator.

The Drift, her autobiographical play, was part of the National Theatre of Scotland’s season 2019 and Scotland’s Black History Month 2018 and 2019. In October 2020 she became an associate artist with the National Theatre of Scotland.

She directed and curated a poetry series Sorry I was on Mute for Fringe of Colour Digital Arts Festival 2020, as well as performing an extract of The Drift for the Festival.

Her recent play, Lament for Sheku Bayoh, commissioned by the Royal Lyceum Theatre, was performed as a work in progress as part of the Edinburgh International Festival 2019. In November the play was streamed live from the Lyceum stage in a co-production with the Royal Lyceum Theatre, National Theatre of Scotland and Edinburgh International Festival.

    Where will this event take place?

    This event will take place on Zoom. You will need to have the most recent version of the Zoom app downloaded on your device to join the event.

    When will I get the event link?

    Do I need any special equipment to take part in the workshop?

    You will need a smartphone, tablet or a computer with Zoom installed to join the event. During the event itself, you might find it useful to take notes, so have a notepad and pen on standby!

    Will I be visible or audible during the event?

    Yes, this workshop encourages active participation.

    Will the event be captioned?

    The event will be captioned using Zoom’s live captioning feature.
