The Traverse Theatre is passionate about supporting the NEW. New ideas, new conversations, new writers.
Traverse Young Writers is aimed at 18-25 year olds across Scotland who are looking to develop their writing skills in a fun, supportive online group setting. The course offers the opportunity to be part of a creative network, where aspiring playwrights can discuss, debate and create great new work.
Maybe you’ve never considered writing for theatre before. Maybe you’re sitting on a story that’s about to burst out of you but you don’t know how to make it come alive on paper. Maybe you aren’t seeing yourself represented in Scottish theatre. Traverse Young Writers is for you.
For this special Traverse 60th Anniversary season of Traverse Young Writers, we are joined by a stellar line-up of playwright tutors including Chris Thorpe, Isobel McArthur, Mariem Omari and TYW alumni Ella Hickson and Uma Nada-Rajah.
The ten-week programme will include an introductory session with a member of the Traverse Artistic Team, one-off sessions with the brilliant guest playwright tutors, followed by three workshops to develop short pieces with support from the team Traverse. In May, at the end of the course, there will be an in-person scratch night in Traverse 2 (date tbc).
The ten-week course will examine and explore playwriting techniques and structures. These online sessions will be conducted on Monday evenings, 7-9pm, starting on Monday 13th March.
All places on the course are first come first served. We are able to offer a limited number of bursaries for those requiring financial support to access this course. If you would like to request a bursary, please download and complete the bursary application form below. Please return completed bursary forms to writing@traverse.co.uk by Thursday 9 March, 10am.
The Traverse Theatre is funded by Creative Scotland and The City of Edinburgh Council, and has received additional support from the Scottish Government's Performing Arts Venues Relief Fund and Creative Scotland’s Recovery Fund for Cultural Organisations.
Traverse Young Writers is generously supported by The D'Oly Carte Charitable Trust.
