About

Over the last three years playwright Nicola McCartney has worked with actor Dritan Kastrati to write a new play, transcribed from 60 hours of recorded interviews.

Dritan worked with Nicola to tell the true story of two epic journeys of survival: the first, as an 11-year-old asylum seeker towards the end of the Balkan wars in 2002; the second, his journey back home through his teenage years spent in the British care system.

Nicola and Dritan are joined by Professor Sharon Cowan of the University of Edinburgh to dissect the process of writing this astonishing biographical play. From the initial impetus to the final stages of its development and production, they discuss the biggest challenges in translating real-life dramatic events to the stage. Sharon, an expert in Asylum and Refugee Law and Policy, will bring fascinating political and psychological context to the event.
