“Hugely impressive… beautiful ideas played with great control and flair” - Dave Milligan
BBC Radio Scotland Young Musician of the Year 2023 Amy Laurenson is a pianist from the Shetland Isles. Rooted in the traditional music of Shetland, Amy explores the music of her homeland alongside traditional and folk music from Scotland, Ireland and Scandinavia. Growing up surrounded by classical music, she has developed a unique style which fuses traditional, classical and jazz elements.
Having recently graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with a First Class Honours degree in Traditional Music, Amy is passionate about exploring and redefining the piano as a solo instrument while challenging its more prominent role as an accompanying instrument.
Amy is a pianist with the up-and-coming Scandi/Scottish folk band Tern (who won the Danny Kyle Open Stage in February 23), and is a member of Live Music Now Scotland with duo partner Miguel Girão. At Edinburgh Tradfest she will launch her brand-new trio, featuring Rhona Macdonald on bass and Lea Søndergaard Larsen on bodhran.
The Traverse Theatre is funded by Creative Scotland and The City of Edinburgh Council, and has received additional support from the Scottish Government's Performing Arts Venues Relief Fund and Creative Scotland’s Recovery Fund for Cultural Organisations.
