Acclaimed play brings a defining chapter of Traverse history back to Edinburgh.

The Traverse Theatre is delighted to announce that Man to Man, a landmark production that received its UK premiere at the Traverse in 1987 before transferring to the Royal Court Theatre, will return this autumn. Academy Award-winning actor Tilda Swinton will reprise the role of Ella/Max Gericke nearly four decades after first performing it at both the Traverse Theatre and Royal Court Theatre, the last time she performed live in a theatre.

Directed by Stephen Unwin, the production opens at the Royal Court Theatre in London from Saturday 5 September to Saturday 24 October 2026, before transferring to the Traverse from Thursday 29 October to Saturday 7 November 2026. Offering Edinburgh audiences a rare opportunity to experience one of the most celebrated plays in the theatre's history, this is a continuation of six decades of artistic collaboration between the two theatres, including Man to Man’s original transfer to the Royal Court Theatre in 1988.

By Manfred Karge, translated by Anthony Vivis and revised by Stephen Unwin, Man to Man tells the story of Ella Gericke, a woman who assumes the identity of her dead husband in order to survive. Spanning decades of political upheaval and social change, the play explores identity, survival, power and belonging with a startling contemporary resonance.

In 1987, a then 26-year-old Tilda Swinton appeared on the Traverse stage in the extraordinary solo play. The production became a defining moment in both Swinton's career and the history of the Traverse, earning widespread critical acclaim and establishing her as one of the most compelling stage performers of her generation.

Following its Edinburgh run, Man to Man will continue to the Berliner Ensemble, Manfred Karge's artistic home, before transferring to New York in Spring 2027.

Ellen Gledhill, Executive Director at Traverse Theatre, said:

"Man to Man is a remarkable piece of theatre that continues to reveal something new with each generation that encounters it. Nearly forty years after its UK premiere at the Traverse, its exploration of identity, humanity and survival feels every bit as urgent and thought-provoking as ever, speaking directly to many of the social and political questions that continue to shape our lives today.

We're proud that the play’s UK story began on our stage in 1987. To welcome it back to Edinburgh, and to the theatre where audiences first encountered it, feels both significant and deeply moving. The opportunity to see Tilda Swinton revisit a role that has become such an important part of both the production's legacy and the Traverse's history is a rare privilege, and one we're excited to share with Edinburgh audiences.”

The return of Man to Man reflects the Traverse's commitment to presenting theatre that challenges, provokes and endures. Alongside championing the writers of today, the theatre continues to celebrate landmark works that have shaped its history and demonstrate the lasting impact theatre can have on audiences and the wider cultural landscape.

Further details, including ticket information, will be announced soon.
