About
Head. Heart. Hand. is a powerful new play by Stef Smith, created to mark the 150th anniversary of the institution that is known today as Queen Margaret University (QMU).
Drawing inspiration from an old motto of QMU, the play weaves together stories from the University’s notable history - from its origins as a cookery school for women, through two world wars, student protests, and a global pandemic. It explores how generations of students have responded to the challenges of their time with passion, curiosity, and care.
At its core, Head. Heart. Hand. is a story of perseverance, action, and the enduring belief in education as an act of hope. Join us for a moving celebration of QMU’s legacy - and the students who shaped it.
Stef Smith studied Drama and Theatre Arts at Queen Margaret University and won an Olivier for the show RoadKill just a few years after graduating. Her plays include ‘Nora: A Doll’s House’, ‘Swallow’ and ‘Enough’; and her recent screen credits include ‘Float’, the BBC Scotland drama, which shines a light on the lives of LGBTQ+ teens living in rural communities and for which she won a BAFTA for Best Writer.
The performance on Fri 20 Feb will be followed by a free post-show discussion with Stef Smith (writer) and Bruce Strachan (director) chaired by Joyce McMillan.
Head. Heart. Hand. is performed by QMU Acting and Performance students.
