Super Mermaid saves the day for the umpteenth time, and the city rejoices. Yet she receives a state pension letter from Chairman Chong, forcing her to retire from her superhero duties.
When a national monument is erected in Super Mermaid’s honour, and an honorary pageant party thrown to celebrate her impending retirement, fans of Super Mermaid flock to this special occasion to catch a glimpse of their heroine’s statue. But do they even know what she really looks like?
Through the transformative power and unique blend of animation and live theatre, Super Mermaid seeks to explore how the female body and mermaids have been viewed and (mis)represented through the ages, through a different lens.
Super Mermaid is a collaboration between independent artists and producers from Singapore and Scotland. This project was initiated in 2016 by Thong Pei Qin (Director & Co-Producer) and Karene Teo (Co-Producer), both from Singapore.
A year-long process of experimentation involving creative residencies with Scottish collaborators – the first in January 2018 in Edinburgh and a second in January 2019 in Singapore – it is supported financially by the National Arts Council (Singapore) and Puppet Animation Scotland. These theatre-makers have been exploring ways to merge animation with live theatre performance to create imaginative, vivid and successful storytelling.
This short work-in-progress showcase will span over 30 minutes, followed by a Q&A session with the artists involved.
