Although the story is a sad one, McNair also captures his subject’s tremendous, vivid energy, as he defiantly pursues his chosen path. There are songs, there is verse, there is a perfectly-pitched production.

I’m in love with a man from Dundee
Though he lived 100 years or so before me
    He was a poet
    He was aware of this

His name was Sir William Topaz McGonagall
And his life, for you, I will now chronicle
This of the Scottish poet who some say was the world’s worst
Is fittingly written in almost rhyming verse

When it played here in April the audience did cheer and did roar
They were desperate for us to perform some more
At the end of each show on their feet they did stand
So it’s back by very popular demand

    • I doubt if anywhere you’d find a creative team that’s better than this. McNair, Brian James O’Sullivan and Simon Liddell directed by Joe Douglas – are pure bliss.
