THE THIRD POLICEMAN

By Flann O’Brien, adapted by Jocelyn Clarke Directed by Niall Henry

show

Written by Flann O’Brien in 1939 but published posthumously in 1967, The Third Policeman is set in rural Ireland, narrated by a man with no name.

Orphaned and sent away to boarding school, he becomes a fanatically dedicated student of the scientist and philosopher, de Selby. One night he breaks his leg under mysterious circumstances. “If you like, it was broken for me”.

The Third Policeman features bicycles that are half human; humans that are half bicycle, a murder and a most unusual village police force. It is at once a murder mystery, a hilarious comedy, a fable of eternal grief, a love story and a surreal vision of eternity.

“A sparkling upbeat production that sent shivers down my spine, transporting the audience into an unpredictable world of galloping old men, bicycles, invisible boxes, an industrial eternity and a house so full of strawberry jam that the doors won’t close.”
