FIRST PERFORMED ON 1 AUGUST 1985
AT THE SECOND TRAVERSE OFF THE GRASSMARKET
ORIGINALLY DIRECTED BY JENNY KILLICK
Losing Venice was originally produced as a Traverse festival show and won a Fringe First, subsequently revived for a British Council world tour. In addition to writing over 40 plays, John Clifford is a respected academic and lectures in the Drama Department at Queen Margaret University College, Edinburgh. His work is internationally admired and many of his plays, have been performed across the world.
"Losing Venice is an anti-imperialist fable. It's also a crazy piece of poetry. It's also a meditation on the decline of the west. And it's also... impossible to describe"
(JOHN CLIFFORD)
Revisit plays which have been instrumental in shaping writing for theatre in Scotland, including work by some of our best known and best loved playwrights. We are celebrating the Traverse 40th Anniversary Year by holding monthly rehearsed readings of some of the world premieres produced through the sixties, seventies and eighties. As well as the writers, we are inviting back actors and directors involved in the original productions.
