What is Cubedł?
Cubedł is a new season of emerging artists work at the Traverse which includes theatre, music and visual art. It involves theatre productions, music concerts, visual art installations, play readings, workshops, masterclasses and a residential writers’ course.

Why Cubedł?
Fate? Whimsy? Logic? Actually, there’s nothing cunning about it:

We’ve got three artforms - theatre, music and visual art.
We’ve got three spaces - Traverse 1, 2 and 3 (plus all the nooks and crannies in-between).
We’ve got three curators - Traverse, Emerged and 7hings.
We’ve got three theatre companies - Highway Diner, the Traverse and 12 Stars.
The Traverse Theatre Company production Tilt is a triple bill.
All three Tilt plays have three actors (except one that has four, but let’s not allow that to ruin our fun).
We’ve got three remixers & installation musicians.

Three is the magic number.

The wee ł?
The cheeky introduction of Standard Grade mathematical notation hints not only at the amount of work taking place but the way that we’re getting each of the art forms to collaborate through a programme of performances, workshops, installations and masterclasses.

Why is the Traverse Cubedł?
Why is the Traverse producing the Cubedł season? As Scotland’s new writing theatre, its our job to find, harness and develop the shifts and trends in contemporary theatre making - and occasionally to provoke and inspire new ones.

Over the past 18 months we have recognised that some of the most exciting work for the stage has been emerging from places that our traditional playwright-focussed plans don’t normally encompass. So we thought we’d do something about it. Don’t worry - we’re still the same chameleon-like company who will still make the best theatre from the finest writers. We’re just casting our net a little wider to find even more vital and energetic new work.

The most exciting work emerges from collaboration - FACT! When we talk to artists in all areas of theatre - writers, directors, actors, musicians, designers - it seems that it's sometimes difficult for artists to find opportunities to work with other artists. We hope Cubedł will provide an opportunity for theatre, music and visual art practitioners to meet, collaborate, fizz, fight, fall out and make up with no hard feelings.

Why 12 Stars & Highway Diner?
In May 2006, the Traverse advertised for two emerging theatre companies to join us in producing new work as part of Cubedł. Glasgow’s 12 Stars and Edinburgh’s Highway Diner were selected and have received bursaries to support their production and will receive mentoring support from all areas of the Traverse.

Why Emerged and 7hings?
The Traverse likes visual art and music but we admit we’re no experts. But we do know some nice people - Emerged and 7hings - who do know their onions so we’ve invited them to curate those parts of the Cubedł programme.

Theatre x Music x Visual Art = Cubedł.

Cubedł has been made possible through generous support from the Scottish Arts Council.
