On March 3, 2003, throughout the world 700 readings of Aristophanes’ ancient play Lysistrata will be presented by The Lysistrata Project - the first ever worldwide theatre event for peace. So far 40 countries are participating in this extraordinary event which will involve thousands of artists.
In Scotland the Traverse Theatre is hosting an alliance of theatre professionals who wish to register their objection to the US rush into war. All actors, creative team and theatre staff are volunteers who have asked to add their voice to the protest.
Lysistrata, a comedy by Greek dramatist Aristophanes tells the story of a group of women from opposing states who unite to end the Peloponnesian War. After matronly stormtroopers take over the building where public funds are kept, the women rise to end the war by withholding sex from their mates -- Until, desperate for intimacy, the men finally agree to lay down their swords and see their way to achieving diplomatic peace.
The performance will be followed by an informal debate.
Tickets can be booked in advance and are free. There will be a collection at the end of the evening when people pay what they can afford with the money going towards Stop the War Coalition Scotland. This is a unique opportunity to stand up for peace and put your voice forward.
Any theatre professionals wishing to take part should contact Kate Nelson on kateN@traverse.co.uk or kate.nelson@blueyonder.co.uk
